Collected Images of Tuna Pole Boats with commentary from my trips

Our bunks has a shelf at head and foot for books and personal items. One of the drawers and one locker at the near end (not shown in this photo) was assigned to each crew member. Notice the urinal and radiator heat for the far Southern cold nights.

Squids (bait) used for catching tuna. Different sizes used for different tuna. Featherless squid is used with a live anchofie skewered on the hook. Barbless hooks allow unhooking by flipping the end of the pole.

Pulling nets aboard into the port side of the lower deck. When it gets close dip nets are used to transfer the bait into a keeper, a slat sided 10 foot by 10 foot box with a hatch in the bottom to dump the school into the samll hatch top.

Here the net is being pulled into a tender (a small boat for netting) this method is used in water too shallow for the main boat.

This is a main boat pull in deep water.

Here you see the dipp nets. The net has been emptied.
